Hamsas are one of my favorite motifs. Cutting across so many cultures, I think I love the universal messaging most of all …and how connected to each other we truly all are. My Jewish friends tell me it is the Hand of God …and even His hand of protection ON us. My Muslim friends say it corresponds to the 5 pillars of Islam and their pilgrimages & prayers. My Hindu & Buddhist friends say it corresponds to the chakras and the mudras and how to stay balanced in the body, mind and soul, while Eastern Orthodox Christians use them to ward off “the evil eye” and encourage angels to come near! I’m always intrigued and ask so many questions when I travel as i’m fascinated with how a simple symbol like a hand can permeate so much of earth’s cultures and also carry so many different meanings. Regardless, while it isn’t a religious symbol for me, it IS a symbol of universal culture …that we are all connected by our humanity and that in itself is something to be reminded of as we continue to strive toward kindness, goodness and peace.
